Kingsmen Go Undefeated In Golden Flyer Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Cal Lutheran men's volleyball team finished its final day in the Golden Flyer Tournament as they swept Medaille College and St. John Fisher College on Saturday, Feb. 17 inside Kidera Gymnasium.

Against Medaille, Andrew Reina led the Kingsmen with 12 kills. Justin Dietrich added seven kills with a .667 hitting percentage. Michael Campbell and Patrick Rowe each chipped in with six kills. Campbell hit with a .750 clip.

Grant Nelson distributed the ball well as he tallied 29 assists along with five digs and four kills. Rowe and Brendan Ward led the defense with six digs each while Dietrich tallied three block assists.

The first set was tied five times and neither team had a lead larger than four points. With Medialle up 18-14, Nelson and Reina swatted down back-to-back kills to cut into the deficit. Reina and Campbell then tallied back-to-back blocks and the score was tied at 19. The Kingsmen used that momentum and finished on a 6-2 run and took the game 25-21.

The Kingsmen were down early in the second. They fought hard to keep it close. With the Mavericks up 12-11, CLU scored four straight to take a 15-12 lead. Dietrich had back-to-back kills which forced a timeout by Medialle. The Kingsmen didn't look back as they took the second set 25-18. CLU really found its groove in the third set, defeating Medialle 25-12 and sweeping the match in 3.

Cal Lutheran did not start the final match of the tournament well as the Cardinals went on a four-nothing run over the Kingsmen to begin the first set. Cal Lutheran was able to tie it up at 8-8 and carry the momentum for the duration of the set with the Kingsmen eventually pulling away and taking the first set, 25-20.

In second set St. John Fisher and CLU went point for point until the Kingsmen started to take the lead thanks to a few service runs from both Campbell and Rowe. CLU took the second set, 25-16. The Kingsmen started the third set off 3-0 over the Cardinals. Cal Lutheran and St. John Fisher traded points throughout the entire set. The Cardinals put up a battle but the Kingsmen finished strong, taking the third and final set 25-19.

Reina led the Kingsmen with 11 kills while Row and Dietrich tallied seven a piece. Campbell had six kills and averaged a hitting percentage of .429 while Ward averaged a .333 hitting percentage.

Reina also led the team defensively as he picked up eight digs. Alec Bennett, Ward and Rowe all tallied six digs apiece.

Both Campbell and Rowe were named to the All-Tournament Team and Campbell received MVP of the tournament.

The Kingsmen (10-3) look to continue its six-win run as head to Cal State University Northridge on Friday, Feb. 23 to face the Matadors at 7 p.m.
