Curtin, MacKinnon Place Fourth on Day One of SCIAC Track and Field Championships

WHITTIER, Calif. — Cooper Curtin and Jake MacKinnon just missed the podium as the duo finished fourth to lead California Lutheran University at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track and Field Championships on Saturday. 

The Kingsmen entered the championships in eight-place with one point. After the first day, the Purple and Gold moved up three spots and are tied for fifth with 12 points.  The meet is scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for all events. Eight athletes advance to the finals in all track events except the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. Nine athletes advance to the finals in all field events.

Curtin competed in the pole vault and cleared a height of 4.71 meters as he placed fourth. MacKinnon threw for distance of 42.41 meters in the hammer throw and also took fourth. MacKinnon continued his day with a seventh-place finish in the discus with 38.40 meters. 

More top finishers for the Kingsmen were Sebastian Sawyer as he placed 11th in the 3000 meter steeplechase with nine minutes and 44.90 seconds and Brendon Carbullido as he jumped for a distance of 5.86 meters in the long jump. 

Saturday was also the prelims for a majority of running events and consisted of 1500 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 400 meters, 100 meters, 800 meters, 400 meter hurdles and 200 meters. The Kingsmen did not qualify for any individual running events on Sunday. 

The top finishers in running events were Noah Gaudi going 13th in the 100m (11.22) and 17th in the 200m (22.81), Luke VanKeersbilck was 18th in the 800m (2:01.36) and Eric Talbert was 32nd in the 1500m (4:26.31). 

The Kingsmen are back at it tomorrow for day two of the SCIAC Championships. The meet resumes at 2 p.m.
