CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cade Haffner competed in the Flight C Finals of the ITA West Regional Championships pon Sunday. He came up just short of a championship and was defeated 1-6, 1-6.
The championships were hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at Biszantz Family Tennis Center (CMS) and Pauley and Rogers Tennis Courts PP). Both singles and doubles format are double elimination with first round loser moving to the consolation bracket.
Haffner represented the Kingsmen in Flight C and went the distance. He opened his tournament with a win in the round of 32 6-4, 4-6 [10-8]. His run continued as he won 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16 and 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the finals as he won the semis 6-3, 4-6 [11-9].
Nick Griffin and Jacob de la Paz both opened their championships with a win and looked to navigate through the main stage. Griffin got a bye in the round of 32 and won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the round of 16. He fell in the quarters 3-6, 2-6, after a great showing. de la Paz won his opening round and then claimed his round of 16 6-4, 6-1. He advanced to the semies after his opponent withdrew in the quarterfinals. He also fell in the semis 0-6, 3-6.
Also competing individually for the Kingsmen was Griffin Biernat (Flight B), Darvel Lossangoye (Flight A), Friedrich Ludwig (Flight C), Aaron Moylan (Flight B) and Shawn Rothermel (Flight C).
Competing in doubles was the teams of Lossangoye and Biernat and then Haffner and Moylan. Lossangoye and Biernat won their opening match 8-6, but their championships came to an end in the quarterfinals 4-8. Haffner and Moylan looked to advance in the consolation side. They won their quarterfinals 8-6, but came up short in their semifinals match 3-8.
The Kingsmen will compete in one more tournament this fall. Cal Lutheran is at the Southern California Intercollegiate Men's Champions at USC on Oct. 27-30.
