VENTURA, Calif. — The California Lutheran University women's tennis team sent three individuals and two doubles team to The Ojai 120th Annual Tennis Tournament which was held Friday through Sunday.
The tournament was held at Pierpont Racquet Club, Ventura College and Ojai Valley Athletic Club/Weil Tennis Academy. The singles events were a 32-person draw, while the doubles events started at 16. There was a first round loser consolation event for both singles and doubles. The men had two division, Division III and Independent Colleges.
Jacob Bear and Griffin Biernat won the doubles draw for independent colleges. They won their quarterfinal 6-4, 7-5, the semes 6-2, 6-2, and the final 6-4, 6-4. The independent bracket included D-III, D-II and NAIA colleges.
Nick Griffin and Ben Vincze won their opening round match 7-6(3), 6-3, but fell in the next match 0-6, 3-6. Dominik Stefanov and Shawn Rothermel were defated in the quarterfinals Def [ns].
For singles for independent colleges, Ryan Murphy won his opening match 7-5, 6-3, and the quarters 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, but fell in the semis 4-6, 0-6. Shawn Rothermel won his opening round 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, but lost in the next round 2-6, 2-6.
Also competing for the Kingsmen on the independent side was Griffin, Stefanov, Moylan, Bear and Vincze
On the Division III side, Biernat, Darvel Lossangoye and Parker McBride competed individually while Murphy and Lossangoye and McBride and Aaron Moylan combined for doubles teams.
Lossangoye won his round-of-32 match over his opponent from Southern California. He impressed against the Division I opponent, winning 6-4, 6-3. He competed hard, and went the distance in the round-of-16, but fell 6-3, 6-7(5), [5-10].
Biernat and McBride both fell in the opening round and moved to the consolation side. Both won their next dual in the consolation round-of-16 qualifier. Biernet was successful 6-4, 7-5, and McBride won 6-2, 7-5. They both went the distance, but fell in the consolation round-of-16. Biernet was defeated 2-6, 6-0, [9-11] and McBride fell 6-4, 4-6, [6-10].
In doubles play, McBride and Moylan opened with an 8-4 win and advanced in the Main draw. Their tournament came to an end in the next round as they fell in the quarterfinal 4-8.
Murphy an Lossangoye fell in the opening round 5-8 and moved to the consolation side. They won the consolation quarterfinal qualifier 8-2 and advanced past the consolation quarters via a bye. The duo continued winning and took the consolation semis 8-7(4). They came up just short of the consolation final, falling 5-8.
The Kingsmen get back into conference play to finish the season. With two duals left, Cal Lutheran currently sits in the sixth-spot. CLU host Chapman on Friday at 3 p.m.
