Spinna Wins at No. 1 Spot; Westmont Handles Kingsmen

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Sophomore Charlie Spina impressed at the singles No. 1 spot, but Westmont handled Cal Lutheran men's tennis in the dual 7 to 2 on Thursday afternoon.

The Kingsmen continued its young season and opened with the first point of the match. The doubles team of freshman Shawn Rothermel and sophomore Sean Yaghoubi came away victorious at the No. 3 pot by a score of 8-3. 

Westmont bounced back to take a 2-1 lead after doubles. Jacob Bear and Ben Vincze lost at the No. 2 spot with a score of 8-2. The No. 1 spot saw amazing play from both teams, but the Warriors ultimately claimed the point as Spina and Ryan Murphy came up short 8-7 (6) in a super tiebreaker. 

Cal Lutheran tied up the match as Spina got his first singles win of the season with a score of 6-0, 6-4. However, Westmont controlled the match after that, earning the next 5 points. 

Freshman Jacob Bear went the distance at the No. 4 spot, pushing his match to three sets. Bear won the first set 6-4, but fell 6-1, 6-4, in the next two. The rest of the singles matches were ended in straight sets. Darvel Lossangoya fell 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2, Rothermel was taken down 7-6 (7), 6-0 at the No. 3,  Vincze lost 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 5 and Ryan Murphy came up short 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the No. 6.

The Kingsmen (0-2) travel to Biola, looking for their first win of the season On Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
