Stags Take Down Kingsmen in SCIAC Semifinals

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's tennis team fell to No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as the Stags defeated the Kingsmen 5-0 in the semifinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament.

The Kingsmen battled from start to finish. They had their chances to score in doubles play as two of the three matches came down to the final points.

CLU's No. 1 and 3 squads went back and forth with the Stags. Both matches had to play to extra points. In the No. 3 spot, Ransom Braaten and Joshua Legardy came up just short as CMS won 9-8 with a super set tiebreaker of 3.

Next, the Kingsmen almost snagged the upset in the No. 1 spot, but CMS held on and defeated Yahn Gawrit and Lucas Tilly 9-7. The Stags swept doubles play as Dara Kashani and Andrew Tufenkian fell 8-2 at the No. 2.

CMS carried that momentum over to doubles play. Sebastian Ariza fell 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot and the Stags had a 4-0 lead. CMS then clinched the dual as Michael Sulahian was defeated at the No. 5 with a score of 6-2, 6-0.

The dual ended with a final of 5-0 in favor of CMS. With the win, CMS advances to the SCIAC championship. CLU finished its 2018 campaign at 5-14.
