Kingsmen Tame Tigers; Win Second Straight SCIAC Dual

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran men's tennis team won its second straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual as the Kingsmen tamed the Occidental Tigers 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center.

The Kingsmen improve to 2-1 in the SCIAC. Their overall record is 4-9. Occidental drops to 6-8 and 0-5 in the SCIAC.

Cal Lutheran scored the first point of the dual as they won at the No. 3 doubles spot. Joshua Legardy and Andrew Tufenkian won by a score of 8-0. Yahn Gawrit and Lucas Tilly made it 2-0 as they claimed the No. 1 spot with a score of 8-4. Oxy closed the gap as the Tigers defeated Ransom Braaten and Dara Kashani at the No. 2 with a score of 8-7 (4-0).

The Tigers tied up the score at 2-2 as they won the first point of singles. Bratten retired 6-0, 1-0 at the No. 2 spot.  CLU then took back the lead as Sebastian Ariza won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6. Michael Sulahian made it 4-2 Kingsmen as he won at the No. 5 with a score of 6-0, 6-2.

Kashani clinched the match for the Kingsmen and was victorious at the No. 4 with 7-5, 6-0. Tilly made it 6-2 as he defeated Oxy at the No. 3 spot (6-2, 6-2). The Tigers won the final match, but the Kingsmen won the dual 6-3. Gawrit lost at the No. 1 spot (4-6, 6-2, 10-5).

Cal Lutheran continues SCIAC play with Redlands. The Kingsmen take on the Bulldogs Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Redlands, Calif.
