Denson Claims Both Backstroke Events in Dual with Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. — Kyle Denson claimed both backstroke events to lead Cal Lutheran men's swimming and diving at Caltech on Saturday afternoon.

Caltech hosted the dual between the Kingsmen and Beavers. Cal Lutheran scored 63.5 points, but the Beavers prevailed with a score of 196.5.

Denson took the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.11 seconds and followed it up by winning the 200 back with 1:58.81. 

Freshman Joshua Blank made history in his second collegiate meet. Blank cracked the program's top-10 list for the 1,000 free. He placed third at the meet, recording the 10th fastest time with 10:44.09. 

The Kingsmen turned in six, third place finishes, making the podium in a decent amount of events. Nathan Sellers had the most, taking bronze in two individual events and one team event. Sellers placed third in the 200 freestyle with 1:47.26, 200 individual medley with 2:03.94 and then combined with Caelan Jack, Collin Spargur, and Joshua Nekoba in the 400 freestyle relay with 3:15.61. 

Nekoba, Marcel Hurtubise and Jake Maher also placed third. Nekoba took bronze in the 50 free with 22.17, Maher placed third in the 100 breaststroke with 1:03.20 and Hutubise was third in the 100 butterfly with 53.57. 

The Kingsmen and Beavers competed in five more events. Denson, Maher, Hurtubise and Spargur swam the 400 medley relay (fourth, 3:41.07), Asher Steelman swam the 200 fly (fourth, 2:03.67), Sellers raced in the 100 free (48.73), Keegan Lisenby swam the 200 breast (fourth, 2:21.00) and Sebi Petho was in the 500 free (fifth, 4:59.16). 

The Kingsmen are back in action next Saturday in their first home meet of the year. Cal Lutheran host Occidental with the dual starting at 10:30 a.m.
