Nybo Wins 200-Fly, Brewer Takes Second in 1650-Free on Final Day of SCIAC Champs

COMMERCE, Calif. — Sophomore Andreas Nybo and junior Ben Brewer made their way to the podium once again on the final day of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. As a whole, the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen came in fourth with a total of 478.5 points. 

His second title this weekend and earning Male Swimmer of the Meet honors, Nybo made his way to the top of the podium in the 200-butterfly. Clocking in at 1:47.85, he also breaks the school record of 1:48.28 he set himself last season at the NCAA Division III Championships. Also in the 200-fly, junior Thomas Hamburger came in 11th at 1:54.79. 

Making his own way to the podium as well for the second day in a row, Brewer took second in the 1650-free, just .02 seconds shy of first at 15:34.47. He is joined by sophomore Stephen Blaauw in fourth (15:50.47), freshman Winston Hewes in 14th (16:53.72) and senior Jack Kirby in 20th (17:39.99). 

"The men all stepped up at the meet when we needed them to," said head coach Barry Schreifels, "Everybody dropped huge amounts of time and our season leaders shined at SCIAC Championships this weekend." 

In the sprints competition, junior Liam McCallum and sophomore Nick Kenny took sixth (45.82) and tenth (45.97), respectively, in the 100-free. Senior Mark Raybukh claimed 17th (1:57.40) in the 200-back, followed closely by sophomore Kye Daniels in 18th (1:58.90). Rounding out the group, in the 200-breast, freshman Nathan March finished ninth (2:08.53), freshman Vincent Hemingway in 12th (2:10.16) and freshman Brenden Fuggles in 17th (2:12.14). 

Finally, in the last event in four days of competition, McCallum, Nybo, freshman Miles Gaitan and Kenny took seventh in the 400-free relay at 3:07.86. They are accompanied by Hamburger, junior Chase Ahrens, senior Jack Hartwell and Daniels in 16th at 3:15.20. 

Though the regular season may be over, those who qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships will compete in Greensboro, North Carolina, on March 20-23.
