Kingsmen Edge Out UC Santa Cruz 1085-1067

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen took the narrow victory 1085-1067 over the UC Santa Cruz Banana in the two-day Banana Slug Invitational to close out final meet of the 2018. 

Sophomore Andreas Nybo led the pack with a total of six first place finishes. He joined junior Thomas Hamburger, junior Liam McCallum and freshman Miles Gaitan to take home first in the 400-meter freestyle relay, and later combined with Gaitan, freshman Nathan March and McCallum to take the top place in the 400-medley relay. 

Individually, Nybo placed first in the 200-butterfly at 1:58.14, the100-breaststroke at 1:00.19, the 100-butterfly at 53.84 and the 100-individual medley at 1:59.39. 

Gaitan and McCallum each additionally notched two top finishes of their own. Gaitan took both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at 55.57 and 2:01.69, respectively, while McCallum locked in the 100- and 200-freestyle at 49.22 and 1:48.11 respectively. 

Rounding out the group, March took home first in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:11.64. And finally, junior Ben Brewer held down the distance races, finishing first in both the 500-free at 4:49.75 and the 1650-free at 16:49.53. 

The team returns to the Samuelson Aquatics Center in the new year, opening 2019 with the Chris Knorr Invitational on January 4-5.
