SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Igor Lumbrano scored the first goal of the season, with the assist from Chris Pelaez, as Cal Lutheran men's soccer played to a 1-1 draw with Saint John's on Saturday to start the 2022 campaign. The match was hosted by UC Santa Cruz in its annual tournament.

The Kingsmen defense stood strong as the Johnnies had two shots, but zero on goal in the first half.

Lumbrano and Cal Lutheran took the early lead with a goal in the 10th minute. Lumbrano fired a shot high and center, just past the outstretched hand of the goalie.

Saint John's answered just three minutes into the second half for their first goal of the season. Cal Lutheran had some chances in the half, but could not convert as only one of three four shots made it on goal.

The teams battled hard as the first game for both programs ended in a draw.

The Kingsmen continue the UC Santa Cruz Tournament on Sunday and play Macalester at 10 a.m.
