CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the final match of the season, Cal Lutheran battled to a scoreless draw with the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer, Monday afternoon in Claremont, Calif.
The Kingsmen finish the season with an overall record of 5-10-2 (3-7-2 SCIAC). After winning three of their first four games in their conference schedule, the Violet and Gold struggled to get back to form, going winless for their final eight contests.
The Sagehens proved to be the more lively team on the attack, outshooting CLU 17-10 on the afternoon. The goalkeeping duo of Antonio Welch and Owen Ebner were absolutely fantastic, combining for 11 saves in the match to keep a clean sheet.
Aaron Winsick had the first chance to find the opening goal in the 10th minute when he was sent through on goal, but the Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper did well to come off his line and deny the forward.
After that scoring opportunity, the Sagehens would spring to life, taking control of the match by holding possession well and creating a multitude of chances in front of goal. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the hosts would hold the advantage in shots 9-4.
In the dying seconds of the second half, Matt Myers managed to find just enough space to fire a left-footed shot towards goal. It was struck well and arrowing towards the bottom left corner, but the Sagehen keeper did extremely well to get a strong hand to the effort. The score would remain scoreless and the game would head to overtime.
After two cagey overtime periods, Adrian Graciano had the chance to grab the winner in the final seconds of the game. The forward cut onto his right foot at the top of the box and his curled attempted was tapped over the crossbar by the keeper to preserve the scoreless draw. As a result, both teams would walk away from the match with a point after the hard-fought game
Tallying shots on goal for Cal Lutheran were Garrett Gaines (2), Cesar Sagastume, Joshua Drapkin, Joey Arnold, Daniel Pacheco, Winsick, Graciano and Myers.
Cal Lutheran will head into the offseason looking to regroup and come back stronger for their 2020 campaign.
