Kingsmen Grab First Win of the Season After Sherard's Late Winner

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— The California Lutheran University men's soccer team earned their first win of the season after Tyler Sherard's late headed goal sealed the 2-1 victory over Concordia-Texas.

Both teams were lively from the start, but the Kingsmen were able to open the scoring in the 8th minute when Cesar Sagastume was able to pounce on a deflected shot from Daniel Pacheco and poke it into the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 advantage.

The Tornados wasted no time getting back into the game, quickly equalizing in the 11th minute when Bernabe Torres did well to find space on the left side of the penalty area and drive his shot off the inside of the right post and into the net to level the game at 1-1.

Concordia-Texas came close to taking a convincing 2-1 lead in 42nd minute, but Owen Ebner was great between the posts, showing his quality by getting a hand to two consecutive shots to keep the score tied. CLU won a penalty just after the halftime kickoff, but were unable to convert from the spot and the score would remain 1-1.

The Kingsmen were presented with yet another chance to take the lead in the 51st minute when Matt Myers was sent through on goal, but his shot just missed wide right of the target as he attempted to volley his opportunity. After some solid defending from Cal Lutheran in the second half, the Kingsmen won a corner in the 84th minute. Kobi Saito whipped in a wonderful out-swinging ball and Sherard rose up to blast his header into the back of the net and score the game-winning goal, sealing the 2-1 score line.

Both goal-scorers, Sagastume and Sherard, are freshman and scored the first goals of their collegiate career. It was a very even match, but the Kingsmen edged the Tornados in shots (9-7).
Also tallying shots on target were Chris Pelaez, Aaron Winsick, Juan Valencia, Erick Mejia and Pacheco.

Cal Lutheran will look to continue their winning ways when they return home to host Ottawa (Ariz.) Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
