Kingsmen Take Down Beavers in OT

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran's Kyle Ferreira scored a game high 24 points, including a deep three to force overtime, KJ Moffett was right behind him with 22, and the Kingsmen pulled out an 85-81 overtime win against the Caltech Beavers Wednesday night in Gilbert Arena.

The lead in the game changed 13 times. Cal Lutheran (8-14, 5-9 SCIAC) had its biggest lead of the game in overtime as the Kingsmen led by four with 30 seconds remaining. CLU was able to answer Caltech (5-17, 3-11 SCIAC), which started the game on a big run and had a 17-point lead 11 minutes into the game. The Kingsmen came on strong at the end, and took the game.

Ferreira not only led the team in scoring, but also in rebounds with nine. He also dished out five assists. Moffett added six rebounds and two steals to his stat line.

Austin Cole was the third leading scorer for the Violet and Gold. He finished with 19 points. Palmer Chaplin filled his line with nine points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds.

Lukas Swidler came off the bench and tallied seven points, nine rebounds and two steals.

The Kingsmen outrebounded the Beavers 45-32 and recorded 16 offensive rebounds. CLU scored 46 points in the paint and made 14-of-17 free throws.

The game started off with the Beavers hitting three after three. CIT built a 33-16 lead with 7:34 left in the half. The Kingsmen battled back and went on a 13-0 run to end the half and cut the lead to 33-29 at the break.

CLU continued that run and tallied 18 straight points during the nine-minute run. Ferreira hit a three one-minute into the second half and gave the Kingsmen their first lead of the game at 34-33.

Caltech built another big lead and led 58-44 with 11:54 left in the game. Just as they had battled back before, the Kingsmen did so again, and tied the game at 70 with 1:01 left. After a three from the Beavers, Ferreira nailed a deep three to tie the game at 73. After a great defensive stand, the Kingsmen forced overtime.

With CIT up 79-76 in OT, Cole and Ferreira made back-to-back jump shots to put CLU up 80-79. After a missed Caltech shot, Connor Cole made a layup after a slick pass from Ferreira, pushing the lead to 82-79. The Kingsmen made their free throws down the stretch and won the game 85-81.

The Kingsmen go back on the road for one more game before returning home for Senior Night. CLU is at Redlands and takes on the Bulldogs Saturday at 5 p.m.
