THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran's Austin Cole and KJ Moffett scored 26 and 22 points, respectively, and the Kingsmen knocked off the Redlands Bulldogs, 93-84, Saturday afternoon inside Gilbert Arena.
The Kingsmen (4-9, 2-4 SCIAC) had four players score double-digits in the win. A. Cole led the charge with 26 points. He was 50-percent from three-point land and was 5-for-5 from the free throw line. He added three assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Moffett, who scored a career-high 30 points in the previous game, followed it up with 22 points today. He was very efficient from the field as he was 9-for-10 from the field. He chipped in with five rebounds and two steals.
Kyle Ferreira recorded his third career double-double. He was the team's third leading scorer with 16 points and added 10 rebounds. Palmer Chaplin was the fourth Kingsmen in double-digits with 10 points, including some crucial free throws down the final stretch of the game.
The Kingsmen shot 58.9-percent from the field, 37.5-percent from three-point range and 80.8-percent from the free throw line. CLU outrebounded Redlands 33-28 and had 10 steals compared to UR's seven.
Cal Lutheran jumped all over Redlands to start the game and was up 14-2 after a three-pointer by Ferreira. The Bulldogs tried to cut in the deficit and were able to cut into it a little bit. After two made free throws from Cole, CLU had an 18-11 lead. A little bit later, CLU used a 6-0 run to go up 11, 27-16, after a layup from Connor Cole. Michael Wadsworth got into the scoring fun and made a layup while being fouled. He made the free throw to complete the three-point play and CLU had a 30-19 lead with 8:01 left in the half. The Kingsmen held on to the double-digit advantage and were up 42-32 at the half.
The Violet and Gold opened the second half with five straight points and increased its lead to 15, 47-32. Every time Redlands got within single digits, Cal Lutheran was there to answer the call. With 8:39 left in the game, UR made it a two-possession game at 69-63. Jerry Lawson stopped the run with a layup. With 5:14 left, Moffett was fouled as he made a layup. He hit the free throw and pushed the lead back to 14, 79-65. The Kingsmen made their free throws down the stretch and won 93-84.
The Kingsmen are back on the road for their next game and travel to Pasadena, Calif., to take on Caltech Wednesday at 7 p.m.
