THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran's starting lineup combined for 78 points as the Kingsmen got their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season by defeating the Chapman Panthers Monday night in Gilbert Arena.
All five starters for Cal Lutheran (3-6, 1-1 SCIAC) scored double-digit points, led by Austin Cole with 20. He added three steals and two assists.
KJ Moffett scored a season-high 17 points and chipped in with four assists. Blake Miles was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.
Kyle Ferreira recorded the first double-double of his career with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He led the team in assists with five. Connor Cole rounded out the starting lineup with 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist.
The Kingsmen had their third-best shooting night from the free-throw line as the team combined to go 24-for-34 for 70.6-percent. They also shot 47.5-percent from the field. CLU tallied 16 assists to go against only eight turnovers. The Kingsmen scored their most points in a half as they put up 55 points in the second half against the Panthers.
The Panthers (8-3, 1-1) had the lead at the start of the game and were up 10-5. A. Cole and C. Cole made a layup and three-pointer, respectively, to tie the game. With Chapman up 20-19, The Panthers went on a 10-4 run and had a 30-23 lead with 4:46 left in the half. The Kingsmen answered with an 8-0 run and took the lead at 31-30. Chapman had the last say at the end of the half and led 35-33.
The first part of the second half would go back and forth and was tied many times. Every time the Kingsmen would make a shot, Chapman would answer. With the score tied at 50, Palmer Chaplin hit a three to give CLU the lead with 12:08 in the game. A little bit later, back-to-back layups and a free-throw by Moffett put the Violet and Gold up 58-54.
With 7:13 left in the half, Chapman made it a three-point game at 62-59. That triggered a CLU run as the Kingsmen scored six straight to increase the lead to nine. The Kingsmen kept the distance and added to it as they went on to win the game 88-77.
Cal Lutheran has one more game at home before hitting the road. The Kingsmen host Whittier Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside Gilbert Arena.
