ORANGE, Calif. — It was the regular season finale for Cal Lutheran football as the Kingsmen traveled to Chapman University to take on the Panthers on Saturday night.
The Kingsmen looked to spoil the Panthers chances for a SCIAC Championship, but Chapman's hope remained intact as Cal Lutheran fell 65-26.
The Panthers jumped all over the Kingsmen and opened a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. Cal Lutheran got on the board early in the second quarter, but the Panrthers kept the points coming. Chapman outscored Cal Lutheran 31-13 in the second and had a 52-13 lead at the half.
Chapman coasted the rest of the way, taking the game, and dropping Cal Lutheran to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in conference.
Senior quarterback Nick Lasher was 16-28 with 201 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Fellow senior, and running back, Isaiah Martin got the majority of the rushes and recorded 15 for 95 yards. He averaged 6.3 per carry.
Julio Angel found the endzone twice on the day. The wide receiver caught six passes for 97 yards and averaged 16.2 per catch. Jadon Cline also found the endzone as he hauled in four catches for 61 yards.
Gabriel Hernandez and Zacharias Muhammad led the defense with eight tackles each. Matt Flynn and Randal Voutt were next with five tackles. Cal Lutheran recorded 10 tackles for loss and Voutt had the most with two. Shaihi Baker forced a fumble and Maxwell Nazarko recovered it.
Time of pessission was almost equal as Cal Lutheran had 30:18 and Chapman had 29:42. The big difference was yards. The Panthers totaled 550 to the Kingsmen's 402.
The Kingsmen got down early, but did not back down, as they fought back. Cal Lutheran will turn its focus to 2023 and is ready for third year under Head Coach Anthony Lugo.
