Isaiah Martin, Kingsmen Run Past Puget Sound

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Isaiah Martin ran for 190 yards and two scores, Nick Lasher threw three more, and Cal Lutheran football handled its business and took down Puget Sound 35-27 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Kingsmen wrapped up a home-and-home series with a win. Cal Lutheran also defeated Puget Sound last year. 

I. Martin averaged 7.3 yards per carry as he rushed for his season-high and second game with 175-plus. He started the year with 179 yards against Southwestern (Texas). 

Lasher was under center and helped the Kingsmen control the game and the tempo. He was 15-22 for 254 yards and the three touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards.

Catching the touchdowns for the Kingsmen was Dallas Martin, Tyler Shimomura and  Jajuan Thomas. Shimomura had 76 yards, with a long of 60, to lead Cal Lutheran. Julio Angel (39 yards), Connor Matzke (34) and Stanley Asiegbu (32) all had 30-plus receiving yards. 

The defense weather the storm from the Loggers and put the offense in a good position. Randal Voutt and Gabriel Hernandez both had double-digits tackles with Voutt having 12 and Hernandez with 10. 

Jalani Blade was next with eight tackles, Daylen Wilson tallied seven and Matt Flynn and Devon Goosby both had five. Goosby, Pete Mitchell and Jackson White each had a sack. Connor Cobos added a tackle-for-loss. 

The Kingsmen were rolling on offense, going 6-of-11 on third-down conversions while Puget Sound was just 3-of-12. The Kingsmen averaged 8.2 yards per play while holding the Loggers to 4.4 

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the first half. Cal Lutheran scored first and Puget Sound always answered. The scoring plays for Cal Lutheran were an 8-yard pass from Lasher to D. Martin, a 75-yard scamper from I. Martin and 60-yard pass from Lasher to Shimomura. 

With a 21-19 lead at the half, the Kingsmen added to it in the second half. The Purple and Gold took a 28-19 lead with 3:41 left in the third as Lasher found Thomas for a 5-yard strike. 

Cal Lutheran made it 35-19 with 9:39 left. I. Martin rushed for his second score, a nine-yard run, and the Kingsmen were in business. Puget Sound scored their final touchdown with 2:06, but it was too late as Cal Lutheran earned their first win of the season. 

The Kingsnen have one more non-conference game before starting SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran is at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
