Kingsmen Suffer First Loss at Hands of Chapman; Taylor Hauls in 33-yard TD Reception

ORANGE, Calif. — The California Lutheran University football team went up against a tough Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent on Saturday night as the Kingsmen hit the road to take on the Chapman Panthers. The home team came away with the victory as the Panthers defeated the Kingsmen 42-13. 

The Kingsmen opened the season with three non-conference victories and two SCIAC victories, but ran in to their first loss as they fell to 2-1 in conference. 

Jackson Taylor and Hector Gonzalez both scored touchdowns for Cal Lutheran. Taylor caught a 33-yard pass from Nick Lasher and Gonzalez ran it in from three-yards out.

The Purple and Gold were held in check as Chapman jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the half. Chapman did not let Cal Lutheran back in the game as they outgained the Kingsmen 462 yards to 310. The Panthers were 50-percent (5-of-10) on third-down conversions while holding the Kingmen to 2-of-13 (15-perdent). 

Lasher was under center and completed 17-of-32 passes for 185 with a touchdown and an interception. Isaiah Martin led the running backs with 36 yards on 10 attempts and Cameron Jones was the top receiver with four catches for 51 yards. 

On defense, Zion Brown recorded the most tackles with nine and Keshaun Charles was next with seven. Elijah Jones led the Kingsmen with two tackles for loss, Jacob Murillo tallied 1.5, Connor McDermott had one and Shaihi Baker had 0.5.  

Cal Lutheran's next game is on homecoming. The Kingsmen host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday the 23rd at 7 p.m.
