Kingsmen Pulverize Poets on Senior Day

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Morris Jackson rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns, Cameron Jones added three touchdowns, two receiving and one punt return, and the Cal Lutheran football team dominated the Whittier Poets 59-20 on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. 

The Kingsmen honored their senior class before the game as Christian AntezanaCesar De LeonObasi Dees, Jackson, William KellyJosh KetcherMarcellous LewisGarrett LongJakar OrisehTecoy PorterEthan PulleyChristian RiversTavita SagapoluRikiah Satoh,Zach SchoenbergerStetson StallworthWill Taylor and Jamon Ward all played in their final game for the Purple and Gold. 

Cal Lutheran tallied the wire-to-wire win with the offense putting up 517 yards while the defense held the Poets to 282. The Kingsmen controlled every facet of the game and were 8-of-14 on third down conversions, averaged 6.8 yards per play and did not commit any turnovers. 

De Leon was under center to start the game for the Kingsmen and completed 10-of-17 passes while throwing four touchdowns. He had 150 yards on the day with a long of 36. 

Catching two of those touchdowns was Jones while Jajuan Thomas and Joc Smith both added one each. Jones also added an 89-yard punt return for a score and almost broke another, but was tripped up after 34 yards. Seven different receivers caught a pass and 11 Kingsmen ran the ball. 

The rushing attack came out in full force. After Jackson's 187 yards, Reid Huseman tallied 70 yards and a score and Lewis added 46 yards on just three carries. 

Defensively, the Cal Lutheran defense came from everywhere and was solid all around. Five Kinsmen tallied four tackles and four more recorded three each. Kelly led with two sacks and Porter tallied two tackles for loss. The duo continued to thrive as Kelly forced a fumble and Porter recovered it. 

The kicking game was perfect for CLU as Antezana was 6-for-6 on extra points and added a 20-yard field goal. Morgan Salzwedel also got in on the kicking game and made both of her PATs.

Cal Lutheran scored on its first three possessions and took a 21-0 lead with 5:26 left in the first quarter. The Kingsmen opened the second quarter with a bang as Jones evaded multiple defenders as he took his punt return to the house. 

CLU scored on all seven of its first half possesions and built a comfortable 45-7 lead at the half. The Kingsmen cruised the rest of the way and capped off their 2019 campaign with back-to-back wins as they knocked off Whittier 59-20.
