Cal Lutheran Set for NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — California Lutheran University baseball won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tournament crown and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The Kingsmen travel to the regional in Orange, Calif., with Chapman as the host of the four-team site. The SCIAC Tournament 2.0, minus La Verne and add in Pacific (Ore.), kicks off on Friday, double-elimination style. Cal Lutheran's first game is at 2:30 p.m. PST. Tickets are 10 dollars and will be sold on site. Kids under 12 are free.

Between 1992 and the national championship season of 2017, the Kingsmen have appeared in the regionals 15 times. This makes it 16 times, since making the move to Division III that Cal Lutheran will play for a West Region crown. The winner of the regional will advance to the Super Regionals held on May 27-28, where they will face the winner of LaGrange (GA) and Centenary (LA) for a spot in the College World Series.

A Look at the Teams

Cal Lutheran
The Kingsmen won their 15th SCIAC Championship, and their fifth SCIAC Tournament Championship, which was incepted in 2013. They enter the NCAA Tournament on a four-game win streak, with the last three wins against regionally ranked opponents. Zach Bullard leads the way with 45 RBI and Max Heverly is next with 39. Six more Kingsmen have 20-plus with Austin Carrillo with 29, Brendan Durfee has 28, Kyle Reuser adds 25, Zach Lafata has 23 and Sean Blandino and Jalen Parks both have 22.

Cal Lutheran has hit 30 homeruns this year, and Parks has seven, two of which he hit in the SCIAC Championship game. Bullard is next with five, Heverly has four and Carrillo, Durfee and Lafata all have three. Durfee has a team-high .369 batting average, Heverly is next with .345 and Reuser is at .333.

Chris Torres, Alexander Rivas and Max Kendall get the starting duties on the mound with many relief pitchers behind them. The trio has combined for 186 innings and 146 strikeouts. Matt Campo has tallied eight saves. 

Chapman
The Panthers received an at-large berth and will play host for the regional. The Panthers were the first team eliminated from the SCIAC Tournament, losing to Cal Lutheran and then Pomona-Pitzer.

Davis Mieliwocki leads the way with 48 RBI and Cooper Foard is next with 40. Mieliwocki also leads the team with a batting average of .416, Cole Minato is right behind him with .403 and AJ Anzia is at .394. Foard has 10 homeruns and Mieliwocki has eight.

Wyatt Thompson has a record of 8-1 on the mound and Grant Manning is 7-1. The Panthers have combined for an earned-run average of 3.74.

Pacific (Ore.)
The Boxers head down as the Northwest Conference Tournament Champion. Pacific won twice on the final day of the conference tournament to snag the NWC title.

Ryan Krout is the big bat and has tallied 53 RBI. Tyler Quinn and Isaac Loving both have 39. Krout and Lovings lead the way with 11 homeruns each. Quinn has a batting average of .340 and Ty Yukumoto is right behind him with .339.

Will Clark has the most wins with six, Cayden Okada is next with five and David Allen and Derek Eubanks both have four.

Pomona-Pitzer
The Sagehens received an at-large berth after falling to the Kingsmen in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament championship game.

Issac Kim has a team-high 67 RBI followed by David Bedrosian with 45 and JC Ng has 41. All three have been fantastic at the plate as Bedrosian has a batting average of .440, Kim is next with .399 and Ng is at .362. Kim has smashed 12 homeruns and Bedrosian has 11.

Jake Hilton is a perfect 7-0 on the mound and has one complete game. Harry Deliyannis also has seven wins and has pitched a team-high 76.1 innings.
