Kingsmen Face Familiar Foe to Open NCAA Tournament; Start Championship Run May 20

INDIANAPOLIS — California Lutheran University will face a familiar foe as the Kingsmen open the 2022 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship with Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. PST.

The regional is hosted by Chapman, and also joining Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer at the four-team regional site, is Pacific (Ore.).

Cal Lutheran, the National Champion in 2017, was also off to a 16-1 start in 2020, before the season was halted due to Covid. 12 players from that team remain, as they lead the team into the NCAA Tournament. 

Four teams will compete at fourteen regional sites and two teams will compete at two regional sites. The four-team regionals will use a double-elimination format and the two-team regionals will play a best-of-five series. Forty-one conference champions qualified automatically. 

Winners of the sixteen regional tournaments will qualify for eight, best-of-three series at the super regionals, Friday-Saturday, May 27-28. The eight super regional winners will then qualify for the pool play double-elimination championship at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Friday-Tuesday/Wednesday, June 3-7/8, 2022.
