Kingsmen Ready for SCIAC Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University baseball (26-14) advanced to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament as the No. 4 seed and is at top-seeded Chapman (31-9) on Friday at 3 p.m.

At the same time, No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer (27-10) will be at No. 2 La Verne (29-10-1). The double-elimination format changes to one site for Saturday and Sunday at Chapman in Orange, Calif.

Cal Lutheran returns to the SCIAC postseason as the fourth seed after posting a 26-14 overall record that was sparked by a 15-9 mark in league action. The Kingsmen won four of their last five contests to secure their spot in the tournament and are making an eighth appearance in the SCIAC tournament. Cal Lutheran will be in search of a fifth tournament crown having won in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. The Kingsmen have also finished as runners-up three times (2015, 2019, 2021).

Zach Bullard leads the Kingsmen with 41 RBI and five homeruns. Jalen Parks ties Bullard with five homeruns, Austin Carrillo has three, Sean Blandino, Brendan Durfee, Max Heverly, Zach Lafata and Kyle Reuser all have two and Gordon Richardson has one. 

Heverly adds 33 RBI, Carrillo is next with 26, Reuser has 25, Durfee has 23, Lafata has 21 and Parks has 20. Five Kingsmen hit double-digits in doubles and seven are hitting above .300.

On the mound, Clay Rickerman, Alexander Rivas and Chris Torres lead the way with five wins each. Rivas and Torres are starting pitchers while Rickerman comes in for relief. Will Watson also comes in relief with 16 appearances and 29 innings. He has a team-low 1.86 earned-run average with 34 strikeouts to just 12 hits. Matt Campo is the closer and has tallied eight saves. 

The SCIAC charges admission for its championship events, with tickets available through Ticketleap in advance, which are $8 for adults, or free for children under 12. Students, staff and faculty with a SCIAC school ID receive free admission. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $10. The live video stream will be run through the SCIAC's web portal (SCIACtv).
