THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran University baseball team is back and has a jam-packed schedule with 40 games in 2022.
The Kingsmen saw a shortened season in 2021 and are ready to show the country what they can do with a new, full year. Seven seniors lead the way as Sean Blandino, Harrison Dunkel, Clay Rickerman, Alexander Rivas, Zach Bullard, Jalen Parks and Gordon Richardson look for a SCIAC Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The teams also includes a huge class of 16 juniors. The Purple and Gold have five sophomores that are ready for a full season and they welcome six freshmen.
Roster | Schedule
Cal Lutheran gets its season underway at home with Puget Sound (Wash.) on Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. We talked with Head Coach Marty Slimak about the upcoming season.
Your team saw a smaller season last year, but what did that do for you and the team?
Even with the limited number of games that we were able to play, the players and coaching staff were blessed to be able to be in our beautiful stadium playing baseball.
What can you tell us about the returning class, which Kingsmen should we be looking out for?
We have had a very young team the last two years, so we will be returning quite a few starters from the previous seasons. All-conference players Zach Bullard, Austin Carrillo and Nick Fusari will be good players to watch this season. With another year of experience for all the returners, we are expecting good play out of all of them.
Then you have the incoming class, what can you tell us about them?
The recruiting class was bolstered with a good freshmen class for 2022. We also have added college transfers that will help with experience and leadership on this team.
What are your thoughts on the schedule, which games should fans watch out for?
Cal Lutheran has always been able to play a strong schedule throughout the season. I would say that all our games would be a great watch.
How much excitement does the team have for the 2022 season?
As with every new season, hopes are high. I believe Cal Lutheran baseball will again be in the hunt for a very successful 2022 season.
