Sidley and Slattery Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. — The accolades continue to roll in for Cal Lutheran Baseball as senior Anthony Sidley and junior Christian Slattery were named to 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team, presented by CoSIDA. The award recognizes the top student-athletes in the nation for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Anthony Sidley is a 3.58 GPA-criminal justice major who earned a department distinction for his GPA, service, leadership, exceptional experiential learning and outstanding leadership. The senior will graduate cum laude this May with a scholarship to the Cal Western School of Law, a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma honor society for criminal justice and as the first investigative intern in the California Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud & Elder Abuse.

The two-time scholar athlete society member and four-semester Dean's List honoree was also a member of the 2017 CLU National Championship team. And this season, the infielder has developed into one of the team's most consistent hitters, hitting .362 on the season, including 22 hits in his last 14 games.

On the mound, Christian Slattery leads the conference and is fifth in the nation with nine saves. In the classroom, the junior has notched a 4.00 GPA as an economics major and earned the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key awarded to the graduate with the highest GPA in the school of management. He additionally was awarded the 2017-18 Academic Excellence Award and department honors in economics for his thesis on constructing aging curves for major league baseball players.

Back to his performance on the field, the Kingsmen's closer has recorded saves against No. 7 Chapman and No. 16 Texas Lutheran, earning him second team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors. He opened the season with 8.2 shutout innings of work and closed the regular season with a team-low 1.70 ERA, allowing just four earned runs in 21.2 frames.

The pair are now entered in the voting pool for the Academic All-American team with results scheduled to be released on June 4, 2019.
