Kingsmen Fly Past Blue Angels 19-7

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen held on for a rollercoaster 19-7 game over the New Rochelle Blue Angels, Monday afternoon. The combined 27-hit contest featured 13 pitchers, 14 extra-base hits and 15 walks, but most importantly, ended in a Kingsmen win.

Leading the way at the plate, sophomore Zach Bullard went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and junior Daniel Stauffer contributed four RBIs of his own. Joining them, sophomore Tanner Wright, sophomore Nick Rhoades, sophomore Daniel Parr and senior Anthony Sidley added two RBIs apiece.

Sophomore starter Mason Snodgrass set the Blue Angels down easy with a five-pitch perfect inning to kickstart the game, and his offense picked him up with three runs in the bottom of the frame. However, the Blue Angels responded with a five-spot in a messy second inning.

That would be the last time they took advantage of the Kingsmen, though, as Cal Lutheran tied things up at 5-5 with an RBI-single from Sidley in the third and a balk that brought freshman Alexander Briggs in from third.

New Rochelle then took a small step ahead on a single to right by Jared Edwards in the fifth, but Cal Lutheran returned with a big leap ahead, stringing together 11 runs in the next two innings for the 16-6 lead. The rally featured a bases-clearing double to left center from Stauffer in the fifth, and RBIs from Briggs, Wright, Blandino and Rhoades in the sixth.

Tack on three more Kingsmen runs in the eighth and a late run by the Blue Angels in the ninth was futile as Cal Lutheran walked away with the 19-7 win.

The victory moves Cal Lutheran to 16-4 overall and 9-2 against non-conference opponents. Looking for their next win, the team returns to the field in just two days, March 28, against the MIT Engineers. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. inside Ullman Stadium.
