Kingsmen SCIAC Tournament Hopes Crumble on Final Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran baseball team saw its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament hopes disappear on the final day of the regular season as the Kingsmen got swept by the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags Saturday afternoon at Arce Field. The Stags won the first game 8-7 and the second game 13-3 in seven innings.

The Kingsmen finished the regular season 22-18 and 11-13 in conference play. Cal Lutheran missed the SCIAC Postseason Tournament by one game.

In game one of the doubleheader, CMS jumped on the Kingsmen right away. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, the Stags had a bases clearing double and took a 3-0 lead.

CLU got back in the game as Kaden White hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth. In the fifth, Max Weinstein reached on a fielder's choice, scoring both Cheynne Giles and then Alec Iniguez due to an error.

Derek Galvin was on the mound for the Kingsmen and only lasted four innings. He gave up eight hits and six runs, only two of those were earned runs. Cal Lutheran then handed the ball over to Jeff Rebello. He went 3.1 innings and struck out four batters, but had three walks. CMS took the lead back in the fifth as they added three more runs.

Cal Lutheran was right there with the answer again. Iniguez reached on a fielder's choice and then went to second on an error. Weston Clark and White scored during the play and the score was 6-5 Stags. CMS got one run back in the bottom of the inning with a home run.

Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings. The game came down to the ninth, and the Kingsmen needed to make a move. They did just that as White made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly. A few batter later, Matt Sciumbato doubled down the left field line and tied the game up at 7-7.

CLU then had their hearts broken as the Stags hit a walk off home run in the ninth and stole the game. Christian Slattery took the loss and dropped to 1-4.

CMS carried that momentum over to the second game. The Stags took an early lead again as they scored one run in each of the first two innings. CMS didn't let up and scored 11 runs in the fourth through seventh innings. The Stags scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, sixth and seventh. The game was ended by the 10-run rule as CMS won 13-3. Troy Frazier suffered the loss and is now 6-2.

Cal Lutheran's fate now rest in the hands of an NCAA committee. The selection show is Sunday, May 13.
