Kingsmen Offense Roars Past Beavers

PASADENA, Calif. — A late nine run surge led by Max Weinstein's four RBIs led the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen to a 13-5 rout of the Caltech Beavers Friday afternoon. Seven different Kingsmen recorded RBIs in the 16-hit ballgame as the team finished 16-for-37 (.432) as a whole.

Weinstein led the bunch with his four RBIs, going 3-for-6 with a run and two doubles. Cortez Espinoza contributed three hits of his own and three runs. Weinstein and Espinoza are currently hitting .308 and .444 on the season, respectively.

Earning the Friday nod for senior weekend, Troy Frazier went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He commanded the mound early, before giving up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but his offense provided him the run support needed for his sixth win of the season.

Alec Iniguez opened the scoring for the Kingsmen in the top of the second, with a single through to the right side to score Anthony Sidley and Kaden White, followed up by a sacrifice fly from Trevor Egan to give the Kingsmen the early 3-0 lead.

Though the Beavers put a run on the board off a RBI double from Mitchell Watson in their half of the inning, Sidley pushed the lead back an RBI in the top of the third.

However, Caltech's three-run fourth knotted up the score at four apiece for the next two innings before Cal Lutheran's offense came alive in the sixth and seventh innings.

Back-to-back singles by Espinoza and Iniguez got things going in the sixth. A subsequent throwing error by the Beaver's right fielder allowed Espinoza to score and loaded the bases for Weinstein who ripped a two-RBI double to center field.

The surge continued into the seventh as the Kingsmen tacked on six more runs. A Sidley walk, Espinoza single, Iniguez sacrifice bunt, and Cheynne Giles pinch-hit walk once again loaded the bases for Weinstein. And once again, Weinstein knocked a two-RBI double to right field. Ryne Yamashiro then joined the offensive parade with a two-RBI double of his own down the left field line, before Kaden White and Matt Siumbato capped off the inning with an RBI each of their own.

With the score busted open to 13-4, the Kingsmen bullpen pitched three innings of one-hit ball. Justin Fong, Christian Slattery and Kevin Baranowski pitched an inning each, allowing the Beavers just one unearned run in the bottom of the ninth.

With a final score of 13-5, the Kingsmen move to 19-16 on the season and 8-11 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran returns home tomorrow, April 21, for Senior Day, honoring seven of the Kingsmen. Seniors Nate Wehner and Derek Galvin will take the mound against Caltech in a double header with game times set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. PST.
