Six-Run Eighth Inning Propels Kingsmen Past Ephs

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Kingsmen took down the Williams College Ephs 11-4 Monday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.

Cortez Espinoza led Cal Lutheran (15-10) with three RBIs. He tallied two hits and so did Trevor Egan, Tanner Wright and Ryne Yamashiro. Egan had two RBIs

Six more Kingsmen tallied a RBI as Cheynne Giles, Alec Iniguez, Daniel Parr, Anthony Sidley, Max Weinstein and Yamashiro all had key hits. Egan, Espinoza, Weinstein, Wright and Yamashiro each recorded a double. Parr had a game-high three walks.

Mason Snodgrass started on the mound for the Kingsmen and pitched 3.1 innings. He struck out three batters, gave up eight hits but only two earned runs. Nick Maldonado was next for CLU and pitched 1.2 innings.

Sal Johnson then came in and pitched 2.2 innings. He struck out two batters and only gave up two hits. He got his first win of the season. Justin Fong pitched to one batter and got a strikeout. Kevin Baranowski pitched the final inning and struck out one person.

The lead went back and forth early on. The Kingsmen got the first run of the game in the bottom of third, but the Ephs took the lead as they scored two runs in the top of the fourth. CLU was quick to answer in the bottom of the fourth and then added two runs in the fifth and took a 4-2 lead.

The score was 4-4 after the Ephs put up two runs in the sixth. The Kingsmen took the lead right back and scored one in the seventh. Espinoza hit his double as he tallied the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the eight, CLU really got things going. The Violet and Gold hit all the way around in the lineup and then some. Weinstein got the scoring underway as he hit his RBI double. The Kingsmen went on to tally five hits and six runs in the inning. CLU took the game with a final score of 11-4.   

Cal Lutheran continues the season with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. The Kingsmen travel to Orange, Calif., and take on Chapman Friday at 3 p.m.
