Kingsmen defeat Ithaca for Coach Slimak’s 700th Win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – California Lutheran head baseball coach Marty Slimak got his 700th win as the Kingsmen defeated the Ithaca Bombers 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.

Coach Slimak got his 700th win in his 25th season at the helm of the Kingsmen. He is the 35th coach at the Division III level to accumulate 700 wins. On top of all the wins, the Kingsmen also won the 2017 NCAA World Series. They have six World Series appearances, 15 West Regional appearances and 14 SCIAC Championships.

CLU has now won four games in a row and is 12-9. Ithaca drops to 4-4.

Nate Wehner was on the mound and got the win for the Kingsmen. He pitched five solid innings and struck out six batters. He only gave up six hits and two earned runs. He got the win and improved to 2-3.

The rest of the Kingsmen pitching staff was also on a roll as Jeff Rebello, Justin Fong, Mason Snodgrass and Christian Slattery pitched the final four innings. They combined to only give up two hits and one run. Slattery pitched the ninth and got his fourth save of the year.

Weston Clark led the CLU offense as he went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Tanner Wright matched Clark with two RBIs of his own. Alec Iniguez and Daniel Stauffer both chipped in with one RBI.

In the bottom of the second, with the bases loaded, Wright delivered the single to take the lead. Iniguez and Trevor Egan scored and CLU had a 2-0 lead. The Bombers tied up the game in the top of the fourth.

The Kingsmen were right there with an answer. In the bottom of the fifth, Clark put CLU back on top. He hit a single, and got two RBIs.  After an error by Ithaca's third baseman, he raced around the bases and also scored.

Cal Lutheran got one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Stauffer came in to pinch-hit and knocked in Matt Sciumbato. The Bombers got one more run in the top of the eighth.

Slattery came in for the ninth as he shut down Ithaca and won the game for the Kingsmen.

Cal Lutheran has a nine-day break before they are back in action. The Kingsmen get back into SCIAC play as they host Pomona Pitzer Friday, March 23, at 3 p.m.
