Kingsmen Drop SCIAC Opener to Leopards

LA VERNE, Calif. – The California Lutheran baseball fell to the La Verne Leopards 5-2 in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener Friday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.

It was the conference opener for both teams. The Kingsmen dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in SICAC play. La Verne got its first win of the season and is now 1-3 and 1-0 in the SCIAC.

The Kingsmen got on the board first, in the top of the second. Troy Frazier grounded out to the short stop and got a RBI as Ryne Yamashiro came home to score.

In the top of the fourth, CLU added to its lead. Cheynne Giles hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Yamashiro raced home to score his second run of the game.

La Verne had an answer though and scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. The Leopards scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and had a 5-2 lead.

The Kingsmen had a chance to tie the game in top of the ninth, but left the bases loaded.

CLU and ULV continue the series Saturday at Ullman Stadium in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The teams will play a double header with the first game at 11 a.m. and the second one at 2 p.m.
