LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif.– This morning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week 33 Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Rachel Barker and Justin Fong were selected.
Barker was named the Softball Hitter of the Week and Fong was named the Pitcher of the Week. This is the second honor this season for Fong.
Barker (West Hills, Calif.), a senior utility player, came up clutch for the Regals in her final collegiate doubleheaders. She went 8-for-13 with a run scored, a pair of doubles, and four RBI en route to a .615 batting average. She was 3-for-4 in an upset win over Pomona-Pitzer (7-6), and was 3-for-5 in a 10-9 walk-off win over Occidental. In the final at bat of her career, against Oxy, with two outs and a runner on second, she hit the game-tying double in that contest.
In a 6-0 victory over the Occidental Tigers, Friday afternoon, Fong (San Mateo, Calif.) tossed a two-hit complete game shutout in just 98 pitches. The southpaw took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and recorded seven punch outs in his seventh victory of the year. This is the third complete game of the year for the senior, his previous two coming against Chapman on March 15 and Caltech on March 29.
The SCIAC Athlete of the Week series is released each Monday throughout the academic year.
