Regals Defeat Division II Opponent Mercyhurst

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 2 California Lutheran women's water polo team went 2-0 on the first day of the Indiana Classic as the Regals defeated Washington & Jefferson 17-1 and Division II opponent Mercyhurst 7-5 Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Cal Lutheran improves to 7-2 on the season. With the win over Mercyhurst, the Regals have now defeated two Division II opponents.

In the first game against Wash. & Jeff., CLU put up an impressive 17 points. Erin Cunefare and Kristi McGee both led the Regals with a hat trick. Jayci Burrell, Victoria Rose Meek, Megan Seeman and Sam Wulfestieg each scored twice. Nicole Guerriero, Christin Hirn and Nicole Roed each chipped in with one.

The offensive explosion didn't stop there. Seven Regals tallied an assist, led by McGee and Seeman with two apiece.

Defensively, Carissa Carlos and Hirn both had two steals and six more Regals had one more. Guerriero led the Violet and Gold with two drawn ejections.

Bailey Meyer was in the cage the whole game. She had a great game as she made eight saves and only allowed one goal. She also added two assists and one steal.

It was a different game against Mercyhurst. The score was tied at halftime 4-4. Mercyhurst took the lead in the third after scoring a goal. The Regals answered in the fourth as they scored three goals and shutout the Lakers. CLU won the game 7-5.

Meyer got her second win of the day and had an impressive outing as she protected the cage. She tallied 12 saves and had the shutout in the fourth quarter.

Hirn and Wulfestieg led the Regals in this game with two goals apiece. McGee, Meek and Roed each added one.

McGee and Seeman led the defense with three steals each. Roed and Mackenzie Thomas both had two. Seeman and Wulfestieg both accounted for two drawn ejections.

Cal Lutheran continues the tournament Sunday as the Regals take on Marist at 8:45 a.m. PST and Virginia Military Institute at 11:15.
