Down 2-0, Regals Shock La Verne in Five

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's volleyball hosted the La Verne Leopards on Friday night for their annual "Aces for ALS" match. The Regals had seven aces in the match. All donations were raised in the honor of Kevin Heller and will support the mission of the Golden West Chapter of The ALS Association. 

After falling behind 2-0, the Regals fired back, winning three straight and shocked the Leopards. Scores of the match were 19-25, 26-28, 25-22, 25-13, 15-7.

Cal Lutheran improved to 2-0 in conference and is now .500 on the year at 6-6. The Leopards took their first loss in conference and dropped to 1-1 and 7-4 overall.

Sophia Muller led the way and connected on 15 kills. Miranda Chan and Kira Mortensen both added double-digit kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Maci Haddad was next with eight kills, Sadie Peete recorded seven and Kennedy Crane had six. 

Tess Holbert and Jalyn Chun split time at the setter position. Holbert recorded 30 assists and 11 digs while Chun had 18 assists and eight digs. 

Isabella Wade recorded two aces and Chun, Haddad, Holbert, Muller and Julia Trento each added one. Trento served an ace to win the match.

The Regals' defense was strong around the net. Kira Mortensen recorded two solo blocks and eight block assists. Crane was next with seven block assists and Haddad had five more. Trento recorded a team-high 17 digs and Wade was next with 13.

It was a slow start for the Regals as the Leopards won the first set and then escaped with the second. It was up to the Regals to answer and they did just that. Cal Lutheran recorded an attack percentage of .333 in the third set as the game went to the fourth. 

The comeback continued as the Regals jumped out to a big 15-8 lead in the fourth. The Violet and Gold took the set and forced a fifth. In the final set, Cal Lutheran jumped out to an 8-4 lead as the comeback looked more and more for real. The Regals carried the momentum throughout the final set and ended the night victoriously. 

The Regals hit the road for their next match. Cal Lutheran is at Redlands on Friday with first set at 3 p.m.
