Regals Sweep Tigers to Stay Undefeated in SCIAC Play

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.– The California Lutheran University women's volleyball team made quick work of Occidental, recording a perfect 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-10, 26-24) to stay unbeaten in conference play, Saturday night inside Gilbert Arena.

Mackenzie Martinez led the attack with 11 kills while posting a hitting percentage of .381. The junior was all over the court, racking up 11 digs as well. Madison Karcich was right behind her teammate, tallying 10 kills on the night while also hitting at .381.

Samantha Landrum was also very impressive, posting eight kills and a team-leading five blocks on the night.

Also contributing to the attack was Morgan Given, posting six kills and Christina Williams with four of her own.

The Regals were solid in the first set, cruising to a comfortable 25-13 win in the first set. CLU won the first seven points of the match and would force two Occidental timeouts before putting the Tigers away to take a 1-0 advantage.

The second set was very similar to the first, as the hosts quickly got out to a 7-2 lead.  The Tigers struggled to get anything going and CLU would capitalize with a dominant 25-10 set victory.

Occidental started to find a rhythm in the third set, forcing the Regals to work for their sweep. CLU got out to another quick lead by making the score 8-3 as it seemed to be another dominant set. However, the Tigers would rally to eventually tie it up 16-16. Cal Lutheran pushed the score to 24-22 but the visitors fought off two match points to level the score once again. The Regals managed to close it out, however, as a kill by Williams and a Julia Trento ace sealed the 3-0 sweep.

Cal Lutheran will look to get back to their winning ways Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. when they travel to play Redlands.
