Regals outlast Panthers

ORANGE, Calif. — Cal Lutheran volleyball players Amanda Roberts, Amy McKee and Hope Stewart each tallied double-digit kills to lead the Regals past the Chapman Panthers 3-1 Friday night inside the Hutton Sports Center. The scores of the match were 25-22, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-15.

Roberts led the Regals with a match-high 16 kills, Mckee tallied 12 and Stewart added 11 more. Jamie Smith and Steph Rolfson kept the Violet and Gold offense on track and recorded 31 and 21 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Carly Rose Howard protected the back line with 14 digs. Mikayla Dobson added 11 digs and Roberts had 10 more to complete her double-double.

The first set started out very tight and the score was tied three times early on. With Chapman up 8-7, the Panthers went on a 7-3 run and were up 15-10. They pushed their lead to 17-11, but the Regals fought back. A little bit later in the match, three straight points by Cal Lutheran cut Chapman's lead to two at 20-18. A few points later, back-to-back kills by Howard and a kill by Paris Dosch tied up the set at 21. After a Chapman timeout, the Regals made it five straight points and had a 23-21 lead after back-to-back kills by Mckee. Cal Lutheran used that momentum and took the first set 25-22.

In the second set, the Regals kept the pressure on and had an early 5-0 lead. McKee swatted down two kills and Howard added an ace and a kill during the run. The teams went back and forth in scoring over the next stretch of points and Cal Lutheran remained in the lead at 12-6. Chapman tried to get back in the set, but the Regals used the early lead to their advantage and held off the Panthers. The Regals had a 2-0 lead at the break after taking set two 25-22. Roberts led the Regals with five kills during the set and Stewart recorded four. Mckee and Howard had three apiece and Dosch added two more. Cal Lutheran hit .485 during the set.

In set three, the score was tied eight times before either team got to double-digits. With the score tied at 9-9, Chapman converted three straight points to take a 12-9 lead. The Regals eventually tied the set at 14 after three straight points of their own. Dosch and Roberts each tallied a kill and Dobson served an ace during the stretch. Chapman answered with a three-point run of their own and took back the lead at 17-14. The Panthers held on and avoided the sweep as they claimed the third set 25-17.

With set four tied at two, the Regals went on an 8-2 run to take a 10-5 lead. Roberts had a kill and ace during the run, while Molly Holloway tallied a kill and Mckee added an ace. Coming out of a Chapman timeout, Cal Lutheran scored two straight points to push the lead to 12-5. The teams exchanged the next points and the Regals were up 17-8. Cal Lutheran kept the points coming and won the fourth set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
