Regals Shut Down Tigers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) No. 23 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team hosted Occidental College inside Gilbert Arena for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match Friday. The Violet and Gold looked to end a five game losing streak, and they did so in three sets.

Despite a quick lead by the Tigers, the Regals managed to tie up the first set at seven, and controlled the rest of the set. The Regals won 25-18. Amanda Roberts led CLU with five kills and four digs. Carly Rose Howard and Steph Rolfson each added three kills and a service ace.

The second set started out the same with Occidental taking a quick two-point lead only to be shut down by Cal Lutheran. Roberts continued to dominate for the Regals adding a few crucial kills. A last minute fight from the Tigers threatened Cal Lutheran's commanding lead, but an Occidental service error gave the Regals their final point of the second set (25-16).

With a win in sight, the Violet and Gold started the third set with extra intensity and loudness from the starters all the way to the bench. The Tigers battled until deep into the third set, but the Regals kept it under control and won 25-16.

Roberts and Molly Holloway led the Cal Lutheran offensive with 11 kills apiece, and Roberts completed her double-double with 11 digs as well. Howard led the team defensively with 18 digs and also contributed eight kills and two service aces.

After getting a much needed win, the Regals (5-8, 1-3 SCIAC) look to continue their success at Whittier College Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
