Regals Volleyball Earns Sixth Straight AVCA Academic Team Honor

LEXINGTON, Ky. — On the 25thAnniversary of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the Cal Lutheran women's volleyball program earned its sixth straight honor from the organization as announced yesterday.

A new all-time high total of 822 teams from 10 different classification groups, earned recognition in 2016-17, an increase from 764 a year ago. Additionally, a record 150 Division III women's programs was honored, second overall to high school girls' programs (277), and ahead of both Division I (145) and Division II (118). Joining the Regals from Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) were Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer.

To qualify a team must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The inception of this recognition began in the 1992-93 academic year and has honored collegiate and high school volleyball teams displaying distinction in the classroom ever since.

The 2016 CLU squad earned its seventh consecutive SCIAC title and won the 2016 SCIAC Postseason Tournament to advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the ninth straight season.
