Four Regals Earn All-SCIAC; Opara Wins Hammer Throw

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Zaria Opara (twice), Sarah Bjornson, Jolie Caya and McKenzie Gerken earned All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) at the conference championships. 

The 2022 All-SCIAC women's outdoor track & field teams were announced Tuesday morning following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches. All-conference honors in each event went to the top three finishers at the SCIAC Championships. 
 
Opara (Carnation, Wash.) won the hammer throw and was second is the discus as she garnered two All-SCIAC awards to lead Regals track and field. She is All-SCIAC in the hammer for the second year in a row. She had a heave of 50.25 meters in the hammer which is second-longest in program history. She had a toss of 39.20m in the discus.

Bjornson (Seattle, Wash.) was All-SCIAC in the high jump for the second consecutive year. She won the event last year. She had a distance of 1.52 meters and took second in the event. 

Caya (St. Petersburg, Fla.) earned All-SCIAC for the first time in her career and took bronze in the 100 meter hurdles. Her time of 15.18 seconds was third-fastest in program history. 

Gerken (Peoria, Ariz.) claimed her first All-SCIAC honor and was third in the discus. Her throw of 39.06 meters was seventh-longest in program history.

The Regals' season continues with the Redlands Final Qualifier. Cal Lutheran is back in action May 18-19.
