Barnes, Rouse Shine on Day One of Redlands Final Qualifier

REDLANDS, Calif.Alexa Barnes and Kelsey Rouse rose to the occasion of the Redlands Final Qualifying Meet, both posting lifetime personal records in their respective events on day one. 

Barnes posted a lifetime-best in the discus throw at 39.68 m, beating her previous best of 39.03 m set in 2016. Her performance also places her fifth in the program's all-time records, breaking her former top mark to maintain hold of the five spot.

Rouse additionally made history in day one, setting lifetime personal bests in all four of her events in day one of the heptathlon. She finished first in the high jump at 1.60 m (736 points), a full 0.12 m above the second place finish. She also took home third in the remaining three events. Rouse ran a 26.46-second 200m dash (757 points) and 15.52-second 100m hurdles (774 points), and threw for 9.49m in the shot put (496 points). 

She finished with a total of 2763 points after the first four events with the long jump, javelin and 800m run remaining tomorrow. The heptathlon currently sits in a close race between the top three athletes. Rouse is just 184 points behind the first place leader (Kimble, 2947 points) and 86 points ahead of the third place holder (Romani, 2677 points). At this pace, however, she is on track to beat her previous heptathlon record of 3928 points, which is the fifth-best performance in school history. 

Barnes, Rouse and the remainder of the Cal Lutheran track and field team return to Redlands tomorrow for day two of events beginning at 11 a.m. PST.
