SANTA CRUZ, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran Regals competed against DIII West-Region opponent, the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs Friday afternoon. The Regals continued their four-game winning streak, by defeating the Slugs 6-3.
Beginning the day, senior Sarah Seeman and freshman Carolina Groff Hinojosa fell to the Slugs, 8-3, at the No. three doubles. Freshman Lilijana Peters-Semak and senior Christie Kurdys, No. one doubles, fell 8-5.
To round up doubles play, junior JoAnn Taylor and freshman Nicole Alvarez, No. two doubles, won after a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4).
Moving on to singles play, Alvarez, No. four singles, won 6-3 and 6-2, continuing her four-game singles win streak. Seeman, No. two singles, added another win for the regals, 6-3 and 6-1.
Kurdys, No. three singles, continued her hot streak, winning 6-3 and 6-0. Hinojosa, No. six singles, fell to her opponent in a super tie-breaker. Falling just shy the first set 7-6, winning the second 6-4, and falling during the tie-breaker 10-2.
Freshman Brennan Foreman, No. five singles, took her match into a super tie-breaker. After winning the first set 6-4, but falling in the second, 6-4, Foreman won the tie-breaker 10-6.
Semak, No. one singles, clinched the win for the Regals by winning her match 6-4 and 6-4. After her win, Semak said, "It was great! I'm glad that I had all the support from my team and I was able to go out there and give 100% and get the win."
Head coach, Michael Gennette, stated after the win, "This clearly puts the women's team in the top half of the west region standings."
The Cal Lutheran Regals look to continue their streak against Chabot College, in Hayward, Calif., Saturday, March 16, at 10 AM PST.
