Regals Drop Season Opener to Warriors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.  – Competing against the NAIA program Westmont College, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team dropped its season opener 7-1 to the Warriors on Tuesday afternoon at Abott Tennis Courts.

The pairing of Christie Kurdys and Gianna Cupo fought valiantly at No. 1 doubles, eventually falling 8-6, while Sarah Seeman and Nicole Neumann dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles. The Warriors were not messing around as they defeated the No. 3 doubles, Annette Sousa and Jade Moore, 8-0.

In singles action, the Warriors took down the Regals, winning five out of the six sets. Cupo was able to walk away with a victory for Cal Lutheran due to retirement from Westmont's player Peyton Trbisky.

The No. 1 set was not able to finish due to light, but Kurdys was close, as it was 6-4, 4-3 before the match was called. Sousa put up the toughest fight in the No. 4 spot but ended up falling 6-2, 6-4.

Cal Lutheran (0-1) has its home opener on Wednesday, Feb 21 as the Regals take on Brandeis (Mass.) at 1 p.m.
