Six Swimmers Reach Podium on Day 1 of Malibu Invite

MALIBU, Calif. — Six Cal Lutheran swimmers made the podium, Friday afternoon, at the Malibu Invitational hosted by Pepperdine University, while four more joined them in the top five. 

Sophomore Andreas Nybo led the pack with two first place finishes on the day. He took home first in the men's 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall at 1:56.80, and in the men's 200-yard butterfly at 1:55.37. 

Also taking a top mark, sophomore Brandon Alvarez took first in the men's 100-yard breaststroke at 1:00.67. He also finished fourth in the men's 200-yard individual medley with a 2:01.93. 

Coming in at runner up, junior Ben Brewer took second in the men's 1000-yard freestyle at 9:57.66 and freshman Vincent Hemingway in the men's 200-yard individual medley at 2:00.10.

Also reaching the podium, freshman Miles Gaitan's 2:03.25 was good for third in the men's 200-yard backstroke. Just shy of the podium, freshman Winston Hewes, sophomore Nick Kenny and junior Thomas Hamburger each picked up a fourth-place finish of their own.

Hewes recorded a 10:19.21 in the men's 100-yard freestyle, Kenny a 48.55 in the men's 100-yard freestyle and Hamburger a 2:05.32 in the men's 200-yard butterfly. 

For the women, sophomore McKenzie Kelly picked up fourth in the women's 200-yard butterfly, marking the wall at 2:18.66. 

The team returns to the pool tomorrow for day two of the Malibu Invitational with the Saturday session scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
