Athenas Snap Regals’ Five-Game Winning Streak

Athenas Snap Regals’ Five-Game Winning Streak

CLAREMONT, Calif.– Cal Lutheran struggled to find a rhythm in the attacking half of the pitch and saw their five-game winning streak snapped after they fell 1-0 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field.

This was just the second loss of the season for the Regals, and their only loss they have suffered in the regular 90 minutes.

It was a fairly even contest as the Athenas narrowly edged CLU in shots (11-7) on the night, but the Regals placed just one shot on target in the contest. Cal Lutheran were unable to create any clear scoring chances in the match and could not manage to produce the link up play that has been so effective as of late.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps were lively from the start, having success finding space in the wide channels. The hosts had the Regals' defense on their heels and were awarded a penalty kick in the 18th minute after a foul in the box, but their forward skied her spot kick over the bar.

However, the Athenas won yet another penalty in the 31st minute and, this time, converted from the spot to finally thrust themselves out in front.

From open play, neither team could create scoring opportunities with any effectiveness in the first half and CMS would take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Athenas would nearly double their lead shortly after the halftime kickoff but Alexa Soto made a fantastic save in a one-on-one opportunity to keep the Regals within a shout.

In the 56th minute, Sonia Chan tried her luck from outside the penalty area but her low driven attempt would graze the outside of the post. Unfortunately for the Regals, this was the closest the visitors would get to finding an equalizer in the game.

The CMS defense held strong and managed to contain Cal Lutheran until the clock hit 90 minutes to seal the three points

Recording shots for CLU were Aly Legrand, Katie Weaver, Maddy Griess, Janelle Gutierrez and Chan (3).

Cal Lutheran will look to get back to their winning ways on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. when the Regals host Redlands for Senior Night at William Rolland Stadium. Prior to kickoff, the seniors from the team will be honored for their hard work and dedication to the women's soccer program.
