Regals and Athenas Finish in Double Overtime Draw

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Regals continued their six-game undefeated streak as they battled the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas to a scoreless tie at the end of double overtime in Claremont, Wednesday night. The shutout marked the 12th time this season that the Regals have not allowed their opponent to score.

The draw keeps the Regals tied for third in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SCIAC) with Occidental at 6-2-4, with just a three-point differential between the top four teams in the standings.

Paving the way on defense was sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Flores, who's fearlessness on defense and 10 saves kept the Athenas from denting the back of the net. On the offensive, freshman Danielle Vis led the team in shooting with six shots and three shots on goal.

Just 50 seconds into the start of the match, Flores made her first save as the Athenas got the ball into the box and took a shot from the left side which Flores was able to knock down. From then on, it became apparent goals would be hard to come by in the gridlock game.

The Regals got their first shot on goal in the fourth minute as junior Emily Williams took a shot from the middle of the field into the bottom left corner, but was caught by the Athenas goalkeeper.

Halfway through the first half, the Athenas got their best opportunity to score, but could not get past Flores. After beating the last Regal defender, junior midfielder Rhianne Holman got a one on one matchup with Flores who came sprinting out to make a tackle and clear the ball.

From there on, neither team could put the pressure on offensive for the remainder of the half as the period ended tied at zero.

At the beginning of the second half, the Regals ramped up the pressure offensively as a precise through ball to sophomore Sam Cornejo set her up with just the keeper to beat. Much like Flores, the Athenas' keeper came sprinting out and was able to make a necessary defensive stop.

The Regals got another good look in the 56th minute as quick give and go passing from Vis and Cornejo got Vis a good shot on goal, but was again blocked by the Athena keeper. Ten minutes later, Vis got another good look on goal as her shot just missed from the right side, traveling just over the top of the goal.

At the end of regulation, both teams were remained tied at 0-0.

The beginning of overtime began with a threatening run from the Athenas that ended in a great diving save from Flores after a low shot taken from the right corner of the field. The Regals got off two shots but could not score as the first overtime period ended still tied at zero.

With one last effort in double overtime, the Regals took their only shot in the period from sophomore Alexandra Fagerberg, but was again saved by the outstretched hands of the keeper to end the match in a 0-0 draw.

The Regals are back in action this Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. PST inside  William-Rolland Stadium as they take on the visiting Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in a battle of two of the top teams in conference.
