Regals Shutout Santa Cruz in Sunday Matinee

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Regals notched their third consecutive win in a 2-0 victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. Senior Sarah Tadeusiak and sophomore Mackenzie Boulware went back-to-back in Saturday's non-conference matinee, recording goals just 38 seconds apart from one another in the second half.

The match got off to a slow start, though, both sides taking three shots apiece in the first half, but neither could put anything up on the scoreboard. Junior Kristina Spaur took the opening shot of the contest in the 15th minute of action, but was blocked by a Banana Slug defender.

Freshman Danielle Vis followed with a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side in the 21st and attempted to curl one past the wall of four defenders, but missed just inches above the crossbar. Sophomore Alana Bernal finished the trio of shots for the Regals, trying to poke in a cross from sophomore Abby McHugh on a corner, but once again was blocked by a defender.

UC Santa Cruz countered with three shots of their own, two on goal, but both flew straight to Regals keeper Gabby Flores who recorded her third consecutive shutout victory. The sophomore is now tied for first in the conference in save percentage at .939.

With the score still tied, the action ramped up in the second half with the Regals putting up nine shots in the second period while holding the Banana Slugs to just one.

Finally, in the 70th minute, the Regals were able to break the 0-0 hold with a corner taken from the left flag by sophomore Alexandra Fagerberg. The ball curled directly towards the right post for Tadeusiak who headed the ball to far right corner for the go-ahead score.

Less than 38 seconds after resuming the clock, freshman Kaitlyn Chandler serviced a ball into the box for sophomore Sam Cornejo who dropped it right to the feet of Boulware. The sophomore transfer then swiftly punched it in to the right of the keeper to push the lead up to 2-0.

UC Santa Cruz would get their last and only shot of the period off in the 74th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out. Gaby Powell stepped up to take the shot from the left side, but shanked the ball wide left of the posts.

The win keeps Cal Lutheran undefeated in the month of October and moves the team to an 8-2-4 overall record. The Regals return to the pitch Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in Claremont, California.
