Regals Finish Level With Athenas

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team took the pitch under the lights at William Rolland Stadium on Saturday night of homecoming weekend to face the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup. The game would end in a 1-1 draw.

The Regals got out to an early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Sam Cornejo showed an impressive bit of skill to chip the ball over the CMS goalkeeper and then put the ball in the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Cal Lutheran came out on the offensive in the second half and blasted two shots off the crossbar and nearly doubled their lead.

The Athenas came back to draw level in the 55th minute when Megan Lo fired a shot into the left side of the goal to make the score 1-1.

Despite many scoring opportunities from both teams, the score would remain tied at the end of regulation. The game would head to overtime in which two 10-minute periods would be played.

CLU hit the crossbar for a third time in the first overtime period. Sarah Tadeusiak had the best chance to give the Regals the win but her shot flew just high of the crossbar. The game ended in a tie after 110 minutes had been played.

CMS was held to only four shots on goal because of some strong play on the defensive back line by Katie Weaver, Tessa Dwyer and Trinity Martinez.

Kali Youngdahl tallied two shots on goal while Maddy Griess, Bri Pinal, Cornejo and Tadeusiak each contributed one.

Gabby Flores made three saves in goal for Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran (10-2-2, 7-1-2 SCIAC) will return to William Rolland Stadium on Monday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Beavers of Caltech.
