Early Lead Not Enough as Regals Fall to Undefeated Southwestern

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – California Lutheran Women's Lacrosse began a string of non-conference matchups by hosting the Pirates of Southwestern University from Texas. Southwestern came away from the contest remaining undefeated at 5-0 on the season after a 19-4 win.

The Regals continued to be strong on opening draws, taking it for the fourth of six games. Cal Lutheran took that early momentum to a go ahead goal from sophomore Giselle Bonilla, her fourth of the season. With the lead in hand, the Regals got the ball to freshman Meghan Angus who extended the lead by netting her third of the season.

Southwestern responded to cut the lead in half before a goal from freshman Hena Koeberl beat the Pirate goalie for her sixth goal of the season giving the Regals a 3-1 lead.

From there, the Pirates were able to take momentum with five straight goals to close out the first quarter with a 6-3 lead.

The second quarter saw Southwestern continue to contain the Regal offense while scoring seven more goals themselves. With those goals in hand the score at the half was 13-3 in favor of the Pirates.

Cal Lutheran again started the half on the attack as Giselle Bonilla was able to get in and score her fifth of the season to make the score 13-4.

Southwestern was able to regain control and score three more goals to end the quarter at 16-4.

The Pirates were able to pick up another three goals in the fourth quarter to end the game with a 19-4 win.

The Regals will be back in William Rolland Stadium to take on Boxers of Pacific University on Monday at 7:00pm.
