Regals Fall to Athenas, Continue to Set Team Highs

CLAREMONT, Calif. – California Lutheran Women's Lacrosse traveled to Claremont to take on perennial SCIAC power, the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Regals reached a new single game record for caused turnovers, but the Athenas were able to hold down the Regal's offense in a 22-0 win.

Cal Lutheran controlled the opening draw and held the ball in the Athena's zone for the full shot clock, but were unable to create a shot on goal. Once CMS gained control of the ball, they were able to establish their offense and scored 7 goals in the quarter.

The second quarter saw the Athenas continue to push on offense, scoring 8 goals in the quarter. The Regals were able to pick up 10 ground balls in the half, but trailed 0-15 going into the break.

The Regal defense was able to slow the the CMS offense in the third quarter. Despite continued offensive struggles, Cal Lutheran held the Athenas to 4 goals in the period.

The Fourth quarter saw the Athenas score 3 more goals to reach the final score of 22-0.

Cal Lutheran's loss still saw the team continue to reach new milestones. Defensively, the Regals recorded 10 caused turnovers which was the highest single game total in team history. Freshmen Kaitlyn Gill and Clarissa Campos each caused 2 turnovers to lead the way.

On offense, freshman Megan Angus was able to get 3 shots, including an 8 meter attempt while junior Arielle Esparza was able to get another shot on an 8 meter attempt of her own.

The Regals will be back at home on Saturday at 11:00am to take on the SCIAC leading Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer.
