Panthers Sneak Past Regals

Orange, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball team fought hard against Chapman Saturday night in Hutton Sports Center, but unfortunately couldn't stop the Panthers from walking away with a 65-61 victory over the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup.

Kayla Watterson led the Regals (12-9, 7-5 SCIAC) with a double-double as she scored 14 points and pulled down 18 boards. Kiana Gray was second on the team for most points and rebounds as she scored 10 and had seven rebounds. Gray also was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

The Panthers were the first to score in the matchup as their point leader for the night, Lucy Criswell, made a layup in the first ten seconds. It was a close game as both teams made shot after shot. The Regals found themselves up by two points at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Regals increased their lead until the Panthers came back and tied it up at 16 all with six minutes left. With three minutes left in the quarter, Jozie Tangeman helped the Regals take the lead. Chapman's Criswell made another layup with 20 seconds left before halftime to get the Panthers back, giving them a 26-24 lead over Cal Lutheran.

It continued to be close in the third quarter as the Panthers answered every shot made by the Regals. With two minutes left in the third quarter, Chapman began to pull away. Kailee Yan made a huge three-pointer, bringing the deficit to just two points with one minute to go. At the end of the quarter, the Regals were ahead 44-43, thanks to a layup by Watterson and a layup from Jessi Westering.

With four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers had found a way to take the lead 57-51. Yan made another three-pointer, helping the Regals comeback. With 30 seconds left in the fourth and final quarter, Yan passed the ball to Watterson who made a layup, bringing the Regals within four points of the Panthers. Ten seconds left in the game, Yan made another great assist as she found Westering who knocked down a three from behind the arc. The Regals battled until the very end but came up short as the Panthers walked away with a 65-61 victory.

Cal Lutheran will hit the road again as they head to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to play the Athenas as 7 p.m. on Monday.
